The Express Yourself series takes students through a task-based approach to learning a
language. The series is intended for Korean university students in general, but specifically for
Sookmyung Women¡¯s University¡¯s General English Program. The majority of students in this
program tend to be low-to-high-intermediate speakers of English. Each book is designed to be
flexible enough to fit a 12 to 16-week semester and can be taught in either order.
In this book, Express Yourself through Discussion and Presentation, emphasis is placed on oral
output in the form of discussions and presentations. Students are first taught the components
and characteristics of a good discussion and then are given opportunities to practice these skills.
The discussion topics are meant to be both interesting and engaging to Korean university
students. Next, the book takes the students through the process of planning, organizing, and
giving presentations. Students have the chance to practice the major types of presentations and
assess themselves and each other in the process.
The other book in this series, Express Yourself through Writing, has students start with the
process of writing well-organized and accurate paragraphs and it leads them through the process
of writing fully-developed essays with an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, this
book is not only a writing book. It also spends an equal amount of time with reading, reading
comprehension, and reading skills.
